This is the Wilkes County Courthouse. On May 5, 1865, the government of Confederate States of America met here for the last time. It is the home of Robert Toombs, the last unreconstructed Confederate. However, Washington has personal relevance to me. My father and my grandfather lived there for a few years before he went off to the Marine Corps. Later on, I spend many a days down at the Wilkes County Jail visiting my clients that were being housed there for Oglethorpe and Madison County.
